Thanks a lot for these. If you don't hear from me again, they worked just fine.

Hi, I did install from the one click installation you provide, but it does not work, I try to open a mpeg or wmv file with totem and it sends me a message that I need and Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer, any idea?

Thanks,
Francisco from Mexico City

Multimedia support on opsnSUSE proved to be a real nightmare for me. I waisted several hours for nothing (should have switched back to Ubuntu right away).

I installed this multimedia bundle, totem kept dying. After running it from the command line, I noticed that it didn't even have the access to audio server.

So, I did several things: added my username to everthing related to audio and pulse groups. Also, in Gstreamer settings I changed the Video settings from Auto to X.

That helped a little bit (I remember I had to do similar things with Ubuntu loooooong time ago, but definitely not with 7.10 or 8.04).

Now I can play some videos and some audio formats. For example, mp3 plays with VLC but not with totem. Some video files can be seen via totem, but forget about XvID, DiVX or FLV. It just says that I need a proper plugin. And I installed libxine1, xvid codecs, all types of good, bad and ugly gstreamer plugins, etc.

What is the deal with broken multimedia? As if that was not enough, there is no Kino application for DV edit/capture.

openSUSE does several things right: polished look, centralized yast management, solid installation, but Multimedia is reminds me of the older linux days, when you had to spend many days just to get basic things working.

For what is worth, I re-installed openSUSE, this time with KDE 4, and everything worked very well. The first time I clicked on DiVX file, it kaffein did a search, took me to community's restricted package, and voila.

That's as far as multimedia is concerned. I'll see how the rest works. But, if everything else works, combined withe the fact that OppenOffice packaged by SUSE has better MS Office compatibility, then openSUSE may take the No. 1 spot soon.

the poll at the top of this page is a little bit off. I use opensuse, and found this page on a Google using keywords, one of which included 'opensuse'. I think that a lot of opensuse users found it this way too, perhaps explaining why so many votes for opensuse. I personally do not believe it is as high as the poll makes it seem.

For openSUSE 11.0 (GNOME)

Add these packages :
-Twolame
-toolame
-libmp4v2
-gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3
-gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegdemux
-gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegmux
-gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg
-ffmpeg
-libmpeg3-1
-libxine1

And totem should be alright with almost everything (only troubles so far : can't play WMV/ASF and Dolby Digital sound)

One last thing : I had first downloaded w32codec-all+vlc+xvid from Packman repository, in case you have more troubles than I have.

I have created a Multimedia Pack portable for Open Suse 11, the included programs and codecs are:

1) kchmviewer
2) mplayer, mplayer plugin
3) audacious
4) k3b, k3b-codecs
5) sox
6) devede
7) audacity
8) avidemux
9) ffmpeg
10) transcode
11) ntfs-config
12) vlc
13) libdvdcss
14) w32codecs
15) xine
16) xmms
17) dvdShrink
18) k9copy
19) Gtkpod
20) Acetoneiso
21) Furiousiso
22) DVD::RIP
23) Amarok
24) Kaffeine
25) kmplayer
26) Kdvdcreator
27) K3guitune
28) Kino
29) DVDAuthorWizard
30) Kguitar
31) Mjpegtools
32) Soundconverter
33) KDEnlive
34) Asunder
35) Brasero
36) Smplayer
37) LMMS
38) winff
39) KmediaFactory
40) DVD2Xvid

you can install any of the above without internet, they include all the dependencies, just unzip the both files into a folder named MMP2008 and create a repository from that folder as a simple rpm folder in yast, then make a search in the yast installer with the name of the program and check it to install it, this is very important if you don`t have internet at home, and besides, by default Open Suse doesn`t include several codecs due to license matters.

I created a blog about the MMP 2008:

It didn't work for me. Neither kaffeine nor vlc do play media files. Vlc becomes blank when i choose a .wmv or .mpg file, looks a lot like a crash. Kaffeine tells me it can't handle this kind of ressource. What to do next? I use OpenSuSe 11, Linux 2.6.25.16-0.1-pae i686 with KDE 3.5.9 "release 49.1".
